Learner Permit

How to Apply

Car with L Plate

Once you have passed the relevant Driver Theory Test category (ie, Motorbike/Car/Truck/Bus), you must now apply for a learner permit for the vehicle you intend to drive. If you are a resident in Ireland, you can apply for a learner permit in person at any one of the NDLS centres located around the country.

Book an appointment on-line at the NDLS Office of your choice, or if you prefer you can arrive without an appointment, however be prepared for long waiting times. Note, there is no option to make an appointment over the phone and the NDLS Customer Call Centre cannot arrange, cancel or reschedule on-line appointments.

What You Will Need

To obtain your Learner Permit for the first time, it is essential to bring these items with you:

  • The Appropriate Fee (€35.00)
  • Driver Theory Test (Pass Certificate)
  • Eyesight Report (or Medical Report). Must be recent (not more than 30 days old)
  • Proof of Address (utility bill in your name or National Identity Card)
  • Photographic ID
  • PPS Number

You will be asked to fill out the NDLS Application form and a picture will be taken of you. You will not receive your permit upon your visit as the NDLS will post it to you within two weeks.

Note: you must be in possession of your Learner Permit before you can book Driving Lessons.
